Sandy Ellis – OEA

S.Ellis

Sandy Ellis (1987)

Sandy Ellis taught school for fifteen years before being elected President of the Oregon Education Association (OEA) at the age of 36. She led the OEA through important changes including implementation of affirmative action and a merger with classified employees. Ellis provided leadership at both the local and state level.

Born in Brooklyn, New York in 1946, Ellis grew up in Chicago, Illinois, and attended school at Northern Illinois University, earning a degree in elementary education in 1967. She taught at Kenwood Elementary in Bend, Oregon, joining the OEA there.

After attending her first OEA conference, she became actively involved in the union, and eventually earned the position of President of the Bend Education Association (BEA) in 1977. A year later, she also served as the UniServ Council President. In 1979 she won a spot on the OEA Board, representing Redmond, Madras, Prineville, Bend, Culver, Mitchell, and Burns. In 1983 she was elected President of the OEA, defeating Rick Wallace by 8 votes.

Throughout her career she has been persistent in her support for teachers and classified employees in grievance proceedings, collective bargaining, lobbying, mediation, mentorship, and professional development.
