The Great Depression led to a dramatic increase in unemployment and precarious living conditions for many workers and farmers. President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s New Deal responded by funding subsistence homestead communities around the country including Arthurdale, West Virgina.

Ed Barnes remembers his early childhood living in Arthurdale where Eleanor Roosevelt participated in the planning of the town and visited on multiple occasions.
