Oregon trustee corrects “4Ls” labor history

4Ls posterKBOO Radio’s “Old Mole Variety Hour” recently featured Oregon trustee Norm Diamond correcting some critical labor history surrounding the namesake of a hip new bar in Portland, Loyal Legion. Rather than a union in any good faith sense of that word, the Loyal Legion of Loggers and Lumbermen (4Ls) was a creation of the US military. The “loyal legion” was formed to break strikes and organizing efforts against poor conditions in the timber industries, union activity that threatened profit and war-production.
